Loizos, Peter. “Intercommunal Killing in Cyprus.”

This article analyses an intercommunal revenge-killing in Cyprus and seeks for factors which make it understandable, by considering the influences upon a militia volunteer and the justifications he offered for taking lives. It stresses: the selective ‘history’ of Greco-Turkish relations taught by nationalists; the exemplary conduct of nation states; local ideas of power, the will, domination and revenge; and the ‘logic’ of thought about relations between antagonistic ethnic groups, which in this example is collectivist, generalising and non-specific in assumptions about responsibilities for wrongs.
