Bijl, Paul. Emerging Memory

An analytical method that moves beyond the binary of remembering and forgetting and approaches memory as emerging. Memories that are emerging are always present, but cannot ‘stick’ in the dominant narrative that a community tells about itself and its past. This form of memory is expounded through an extensive study of a number of photographs depicting colonial atrocities committed in the Dutch East Indies in the early 20th century and how these have been reframed at different times by different communties.
