Baird, Kevin J. & Sangkot Marzuki. War Crimes in Japan-Occupied Indonesia
This monograph looks at the final years of the Japanese Empire’s occupation of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and the medical experiments conducted on the romusha (forced labourers). While many romusha disappeared from records, 900 of them were subject to brutal and immoral medical experiments meant to aid the Japanese war effort. Baird and Marzuki closely follow the case of Achmad Mochtar, an Indonesian scientist who got tortured and used as a scapegoat for the romusha murders by the Japanese military.
