Launch of Raya Morag’s Perpetrator Cinema

The fourth event in our New Books in Perpetrator Studies series will take place on May 13 at 16.00 CET and will feature Raya Morag’s monograph  Perpetrator Cinema: Confronting Genocide in Cambodian Documentary (Columbia UP, 2020). The book explores a new trend in the cinematic depiction of genocide that has emerged in Cambodian documentary in the late twentieth- and early twenty-first centuries: a direct confrontation between the first-generation survivor and the perpetrator of genocide. It argues that these documentaries enable moral resentment to become a way to experience, symbolize, judge, and finally incorporate evil into a system of ethics.

Discussants will be Ben Kiernan, Deirdre Boyle, and Cathy Caruth. The event will be moderated by Vicente Sánchez Biosca.

Attendees can use the code “CUP20” for 20% off. (N.B.: this code will work in North & South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East but not in East/Southeast/South Asia or Australia/New Zealand (Columbia UP has a different distributor for those territories)).
