Decolonisation War in Indonesia 1945-1950: Incompatible Memories?

The Arq Psychotrauma Expert Group, the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, the Dutch Institute of Military History, NIOD Institute for War-, Holocaust-, and Genocidestudies, and the Veteraneninstituut are organising a debate on 4 November entitled: Decolonisation War in Indonesia 1945-1950: Incompatible Memories?

Since the publication of Rémy Limpach’s dissertation entitled De brandende kampongs van generaal Spoor (The burning villages of General Spoor), the decolonisation war in Indonesia has been brought to the attention of a wide audience. The impact of this war on the people involved in it and on society as a whole is noticeable even today. However, the experiences and interpretations of this problematic history differ a lot. How did Dutch society deal with the memories of this war? How should we deal with these memories in the future? Various specialists consider these questions from different perspectives. Their short interventions will be followed by a discussion.
