13th Auschwitz Never Again Lecture: Roméo Dallaire

On 27 January, Lieutenant-General (external duty) Roméo A. Dallaire will be honored with the Annetje Fels Kupferschmidt Onderscheiding (Annetje Fels Kupferschmidt Distinction) at the Royal Tropical Institute. Due to this honor, Roméo A. Dallaire will deliver the 13th Auschwitz Never Again lecture.

Laudatio by Uğur Ümit Üngör.

Roméo A. Dallaire (1946, The Netherlands) is a Lieutenant-General (external duty) and has served as a senator in Canada. Dallaire was the commandant of the UN peace mission UNAMIR in Rwanda at the time of the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Despite repeated calls to broaden his mandate and provide more manpower, UN support was not extended. A genocide in which one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered took place before his very eyes.

Since this time he has worked tirelessly to prevent genocide and other crimes against humanity. Working with the International Court of Justice, NATO, and Unicef he developed two UN resolutions. He has written about his experiences in Shake Hands with the Devil and They fight like soldiers, They die like Children. He works also for the Child Soldier Intiative, which he founded, and he delivers lectures across the globe.

For his work in the prevention of genocide and crimes against humanity he will receive the Annetje Fels Kupferschmidt Onderscheiding.
