Schakels in een systeem. De bewakers van Westerbork
Based on new research by historian Frank van Riet, Camp Westerbork Memorial has created a new exhibition, “The Guards of Westerbork.” The exhibition focuses on those who guarded the camp: German and Dutch SS, Dutch police, and Jewish prisoners. The deportation trains were accompanied by the Grüne Polizei. These different groups of guards have been the subject of heated debates concerning their status as perpetrators, their guilt, and whether they knew of the extermination in the East. These debates and questions will be the subject of the one-day symposium ‘Schakels in een systeem. De bewakers van Westerbork’
The symposium will take place on 17 February 2017, from 11.00 to 18.00 at Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork.
Among the participants are Bart van der Boom, Hinke Piersma, Marnix Croes, Guus Meershoek, Frank van Riet, Johannes Houwink ten Cate, Gerrit Breeuwsma, Rinke Smedinga en Ad van Liempt.
